When spring arrived in West Virginia, it meant that baseball was right around the corner. Baseball meant hotdogs at the ball park in the evenings for dinner. If you live south of the fabled “Slaw Line” in West Virginia you ate WV hot dog slaw on your hot dogs.

If you lived south of the fabled slaw line in West Virginia, you ate slaw on your hot dogs. This slaw was a favorite of many a generation in our home town at the baseball park and will soon become your go to for summer cookouts as well.

I have run across many people that have never tried slaw on a hot dog throughout my life time. Growing up in West Virginia it was just the way we ate them. If you have never had it this way, keep an open mind and give it a try.

This is my Mom’s hot dog slaw, which she made for the baseball park concession stand for over 30 years. It was a favorite of many over the years and will surely become one of yours as well.

WV Hot Dog Slaw Is Super Simple To Put Together

Start by cutting the head of cabbage in half and remove the core. You can cut a triangle out of the bottom to remove the core. It is very bitter and needs to be taken out.

Time to shred the cabbage, You can use a food processor, like this one I use, to quickly dispatch this task. If you don’t have a food processor you can use a good old fashioned box grater to shred it up. And you will also get your arm workout in. You could also use one of those pre-shredded bags of cole slaw mix in the produce section, if you are in a hurry.

Let’s Finish This Up

Shred up 4 cups of cabbage and set aside. In a large bowl add the mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar, sugar, buttermilk, salt and pepper. Mix with a whisk until the sugar has dissolved.

Add in the shredded cabbage and mix with a spatula to combine cover and place into the refrigerator for at least 4 hours. Mix again when you remove from the fridge and serve cold.

How Long Will This Cole Slaw Keep

This Slaw will keep in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days, depending on how fresh the cabbage was and how fast after the cookout that you get any leftovers into into the fridge. It is a good idea to place the bowl containing the slaw into another bowl of ice to keep it cold outside.

Because this is a mayonnaise based slaw, it really doesn’t freeze well. It can be frozen, however he sauce will tend to break as it thaws after being in the freezer, so I don’t recommend freezing it.
